Garuda Wisnu Kencana, The New Icon of Bali

DIGDAYA NUSANTARA – President Joko Widodo recently inaugurated the Garuda Wisnu Kencana Statue (GWK) at Bukit Ungasan, Badung, Bali, Indonesia, precisely on Saturday, September 22, 2018.

The inauguration of the Statue of GWK was also attended by the 5th President of the Republic of Indonesia Megawati Soekarnoputri, the 6th Vice President of Indonesia Try Sutrisno, Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan, Minister of Tourism Arief Yahya, Minister of Finance Sri Mulyani and Minister of Agrarian Affairs & Spatial Planning Sofyan Djalil.

“I give high appreciation to Mr. Nyoman Nuarta and also PT Alam Sutera who consistently work on GWK completely. Of course also to Mr. Joop Ave as the originator.” said Arief Yahya during a press conference at the inauguration of GWK .

The 121-meter high statue with 28 years of working time will become Bali’s new tourism icon.

With the inauguration of GWK, Arief Yahya hopes to invite 4 million foreign tourists to visit the third highest statue in the world.

The construction of Garuda Wisnu Kencana stems from the idea of ​​Nyoman Nuarta with the Minister of Tourism, Post & Telecommunications Joop Ave, Bali Governor Ida Bagus Oka, as well as Minister of Mines and Energy Ida Bagus Sudjana around 1989. Beginning in 1990, the plan was presented to President Soeharto and approved.

The laying of the first stone for the construction of the GWK Cultural Park in Bukit Ungasan Jimbaran was carried out in 1997. The making of GWK pieces involved hundreds of artists. And about 120 artists worked on the installation in Bali.
